We’re in the sports world, let me use a sporting analogy. ChangeUnion – Marina – is the team coach that the team doesn’t know it needs. Crucially, we were given tools that are easy to understand and use – so the whole team starts operating effectively.
What ChangeUnion does is so intuitive. If we’d owned our problem, if we’d been able to identify it – I quite think we might not have needed ChangeUnion. But that’s the point. If we’d set out the problems, or talked about how we’d tackle them in advance, it would not have been such a successful, organic process.
I can see how some businesses might feel more comfortable with itemised solutions, or completely mapped out, but that’s just it: you can’t always predict the right solutions, if you haven’t been able – yourself – to diagnose or cure the problem.”
Her speciality is getting in under the bonnet. She gets into the nitty-gritty of a business’s complex operating systems – the people-systems – so quickly. She looks at symptoms on the surface, and knows which tools to use to then go deeper and surface the root of a problem. Marina could see which skills were not being used, but her approach then helped some of our strongest characters to take challenging, personal steps towards becoming better leaders.
Coaching with ChangeUnion has been one of the hardest and also one of the best things I could ever have done, both personally and professionally. Identifying your blind spots, recognising your weaknesses and reconsidering your values are incredibly challenging things to do, but completely worthwhile and the team coaches you through the process, unpacking your thoughts and reactions as you go.
When you challenge, or push or query something, there’s no ‘shut down’ – rather, you learn how to work through that challenge. Sometimes the changes and learnings and adjustments you need to make are minimal, sometimes they’re more fundamental. There’s a check-in, and the support is invaluable. The work I’ve done with ChangeUnion doesn’t just help me in this job, or this moment. It’s going to help in my whole career and beyond.
